Dark Memory Panel Discussion Slated for April 6 (Rudolf Baranik)

(Santa Fe Homes Blog) On April 6, 2009, at 6pm at Tipton Hall there will be a panel discussion titled, “Dark History: Rudolf Baranik and Art About History”. The panel discussing the life and work of Rudolf Baranik includes: David Craven, Jim Drobnick, Lucy Lippard, and May Stevens

Rudolf Baranik was a painter and rare character in the art world of the 1970’s and 80’s, refusing to choose between making work that was beautiful and work that was political in an environment that was not keen to blur the line between the two.

Although well-known amongst the activist communities of the late 60’s and early 70’s, Baranik continues to be strangely absent from the histories and collections of
the mainstream art world. Richard Leslie wrote in 1998 a few months after Baranik’s death:

“One of the dirty little secrets of the more canonical art world is that it continues to claim for art the ‘aura’ of social relevance derived from the
early politicized history of the avant-garde while at the same time it marginalizes art forms such as Baranik’s that are developed from fully-committed political positions.”

The panel will discuss Baranik’s role in art history in addition to his art about history, and how art serves as a way of memorializing, in the strictest sense of the word, the past. Admission is $5.

Santa Fe Given More Time to Prepare for Digital Evolution

(Santa Fe Homes Blog) Thanks to a delay approved by the House of Representatives, Americans will have more time to upgrade their TV sets to receive digital-only signals. Just two weeks away from the original deadline, the House of Representatives approved a delay of four months, making the new switch to digital June 12, 2009. The move is especially important for the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, which is in the highest market of citizens not ready for the switch. Only 12% of Santa Fe residents were prepared for the switch to digital.

The government lists the main reason for the switch, in addition to upgrading television signals, as follows:

“Converting to DTV also will free up parts of the scarce and valuable broadcast spectrum. Those portions of the spectrum can then be used for other important services, such as public and safety services (police and fire departments, emergency rescue), and advanced wireless services.”

The switch was supposed to take place on February 17, but both the House and Senate approved delays stating that the United States wasn’t ready yet even though it has known about the switch for years. Cities in New Mexico, like Santa Fe and Albuquerque were the worst prepared for the switch according to a national poll.

Santa Fe Not Ready for Digital Television Transition

(Santa Fe Homes Blog) This week the House rejeccted a bill that would further delay the transition of American households to digital television.  With no further delays, on February 17 all media will be forced to transmit digitally. The problem is that out of all the markets measured by Neilson, the Albuquerque-Santa Fe market is at the bottom of the list for being prepared for the transition, with less than 13% of households ready for the change.

The U.S. government has set up an informative Website at www.dtv.gov which discusses all aspects of the transition and how it will affect television viewing and households. With the majority of Santa Fe residents unprepared for the transition, many may face a surprise when their television stops working on February 17.
